Piazza Navona is the essence of a square (despite its rectangular shape :-p). It was designed and built as a piazza down to every detail and it bears a historic and architectural value that is nearly unmatched. Piazza Duomo, as the name suggests, was built around the Duomo. The other relevant structures that surround it have a life of their own, they don't interact with each other nor create actual continuity/harmony within the square. Still, it's too bad that one of these two has to be dropped considering some of the other contenders (which, sorry to say, are at best anonymous).
